Legal Aid, Pro-Bono Work, and Fair Fees

I aim to make legal services accessible and predictable. Fees will always be discussed early and confirmed in writing.

Legal Aid Ontario

I accept Legal Aid Ontario certificates for the following:

  • Child protection cases (CAS matters)

  • Criminal law matters

If you have a certificate, I will explain how coverage works and what to expect in your case, including any contribution agreement if Legal Aid requires one.

Sliding-Scale Fees (For Clients Without Legal Aid) SEE BELOW

If you do not qualify for Legal Aid, sliding-scale rates may be available in appropriate cases. Sliding-scale availability depends on the nature of the file and capacity.

Disbursements and taxes

Disbursements (e.g., filing fees or record costs) are separate and will be discussed beforehand. HST applies where required.

Limited-Scope Services

In some situations, I can offer limited-scope assistance (for example, preparing for a conference, reviewing a proposed plan, drafting a focused affidavit, or advising on a specific step). If limited-scope services are appropriate, the scope will be clearly set out in writing.

Consultations

I want to offer an initial consultation to explain your situation, answer your questions, and outline the next steps. The consultation fee structure (free or paid) can be set to your preference, and I can format the site accordingly.

Proof of Income

I will require proof of income to administer the sliding-scale below fairly.

I strongly believe in fair access to justice and never want to turn clients away. However, my business still must be modestly profitable. If you feel the income-based fee scale does not adequately reflect your circumstances because, for example, you or your child lives with a severe disability, or a provable situation like that, I am open to negotiating equitable fees or pro bono services where the nature of the file and my capacity permit.
